How to Generate a SSH Key
Here's how you can create and use SSH keys to securely and conveniently connect to remote servers without relying on passwords.
Secure Shell (SSH) keys are a method of securely connecting to remote servers and systems. With these type of keys, you can authenticate to a remote server without the need for a password, making it highly convenient. I will walk you through creating an SSH key pair using the terminal.
What is an SSH Key?
An SSH key pair consists of two parts:
- Public Key
As the name suggests, this key can be shared openly. Only the matching private key can decrypt these messages.
- Private Key
This is kept secret and is used to decrypt messages encrypted by the public key. You should NEVER share the private key with anyone.
Why Use SSH Keys?
SSH keys are used for:
- Secure connections
- SSH keys offer a more secure way to log in than passwords.
- Automated access
- Scripts and automated processes can use SSH keys to connect without manual password entry.
- Enhanced security
- SSH keys are far more secure than passwords, as they are not vulnerable to brute force attacks.
