A.I is Making Us Lazier
If people rely more on AI for their daily tasks, their own problem-solving and creative skills could decline over generations.
Many people have quickly adapted to artificial intelligence in their day-to-day life.
As a 13-year-old in 7th grade for the 2023-2024 year, I've seen AI being frequently used on the internet and even in school. Some of my classmates have even been caught using AI for homework and projects that are supposed to show their own creativity and problem-solving skills. This made me wonder: what will happen to real creativity if you can just ask an AI for information and get it in minutes without doing the research yourself?
First, let's define what I mean by "real" creativity. Real creativity is something you create on your own, without the use of AI. For example, making your own art inspired by someone else's art, or doing your own research by looking through websites and statistics.
AI has become very popular and has been developing rapidly, especially since the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in November 2022. Companies like Google are also developing their own AI tools, like Gemini, and investing in AI technology.
I personally think that AI is an amazing tool for learning new things or simplifying complex information, but I also think it's making people lazier. Before AI tools like ChatGPT were brought to the market, pieces such as writing and coding were done by humans. Now, many teachers and employers have to use plagiarism tools on a day-to-day basis to detect AI-generated content. According to Pew Research, about 55% of Americans use AI tools regularly.
If people use AI on a day-to-day basis for tasks like homework, writing code, or essays, it can slowly make them lazier and less knowledgeable about those topics. I believe that relying too much on AI will reduce our creativity over generations. Many things, like essays, names, titles, and code, can be generated by AI tools like ChatGPT. People might start to question the need for original creativity: "Why should I make this myself if ChatGPT can do it for me?"
This doesn't mean the world will end, but our creativity skills could decline over time because of the widespread use of AI. AI is definitely a great tool. I love that it can provide information quickly and help with many tasks. It's a significant advancement in artificial intelligence, but it has a downside—creativity might decline. I'm not telling you to quit using AI – however, i'm offering you a new perspective. AI can help you in your tasks, but it shouldn't do your tasks. AI is affecting the global world in many areas, including education, technology, and retail. However, like anything, it has both pros and cons.
